Chiamour - A Visual Novel

A sensory-rich, heartwriggling story with stories within, about witches and demons, winters and war...the kind that go on in the hearts of those who remember, long after history has licked its wounds. Players will meet a whimsical, forgetful book made of the magic of Chiamour.

 UI Design

I solely concentrated on the UI for Chiamour. It was a fun process with working on a team alongside two programmers and game testers. For the most part the process was streamlined since this was for a game jam. We went straight from Wireframes to Finals.

Wireframes - I opted to go with pretty detailed wireframes in this game as the people I were working with were not used to working with dedicated UI designers and needed to get a fairly decent idea of what I was thinking with images, elements, and text.

Home Screen - I wanted to keep the home screen simple so it was an image of the book most of the game play takes place and an easy to read list for the menu itself.

Dialogue Screen - The project lead wanted a distinction between all speaking roles in how they were displayed on screen. I ended up with the bottom text box being for the player character; the speech bubbles, one snowy and one inky, for the different spirits; and another for Chiamour when they're open has their dialogue on the book itself.

Final Game Designs - These are the pages I ended up designing for the game.

Game Menu - I wanted this to be like a fallen sheet of notes from Chiamour so the background is paper and has ink drawn over it.

Riddle Mini Game - This was the section we had the hardest time with. I went through several versions of the hint system but the project lead wanted everything to do with the book literally be part of the book. I took inspirations from popup books to have this toggle system where the hints could be scrolled through.

Store Front

I was in charge of creating the storefront for Chiamour on Itch.io. I kept with the them of everything being on paper, slightly magical, and having large inkblots.
